About

Negative Space is a short first-person audio exploration game set in total darkness. Listen for hidden beacons, spray paint into the void, and use the marks left behind to reveal the rooms, walls, and objects around you.

The beacons themselves are ethereal: paint does not stick to them. Instead, they appear as dark silhouettes cut out of the glowing paint around them. Find each beacon by sound, reveal its shape, and collect all eight as quickly and efficiently as you can.

Negative Space was built in C++ with raylib using a custom game engine extended for 3D gameplay, real-time paint marking, room-based spatial audio, acoustic portals, obstruction, diffraction, and convolution reverb.

Headphones Recommended!

Audio is central to the beating the game and getting a good score, so headphones are strongly recommended.

Aim at beacon + Right Mouse: Collect
Q: Toggle fullscreen
R: Restart
Escape: Quit

Install instructions

Windows

  1. Download the Windows zip.
  2. Extract the zip to a folder.
  3. Open the extracted folder and run NegativeSpace.exe.
  4. Keep the assets folder next to the executable.

macOS

  1. Download the macOS zip.
  2. Extract the zip.
  3. Open Negative Space.app.
  4. If macOS blocks the app because it is unsigned, right-click the app and choose Open, then confirm.

Note: The builds are currently unsigned, so you may see warnings on first launch.
